Creating a Living Income Implementation guide adapted to the Ivorian Cocoa Context
01
Context
The Conseil du Café Cacao hosts a working group (GT 8), within the Public-Private Partnerships Platform, which is dedicated to Living Income;
Working group members, who represent the entire cocoa ecosystem in Côte d’Ivoire, needed to be supported in the creation of guidance tools for Living Income projects, as well as in the implementation of a monitoring framework for these initiatives.
02
Approach
Extensive documentary review and interviews with experts from research, local institutions and cocoa sector;
Review and comparison of the existing tools and methodologies to evaluate the Living Income benchmarks and cocoa household incomes in Côte d’Ivoire;
Preliminary mapping of existing Living Income projects in Côte d’Ivoire;
Creation of follow-up and evaluation tools on Living Income projects;
Redaction of an implementing guide for Living Income projects adapted to Côte d’Ivoire.
03
Key Takeaways
The definition of a LI project is essential but still not completely agreed yet for GT 8 members;
It is crucial to calculate and monitor the income gap for a Living Income project;
Field understanding is key at every step of the approach;
One activity cannot close the income gap: a LI project should include a mix of activities;
Main activities implemented focus on income diversification, gender, good agricultural practices and micro-saving schemes. Adapting purchasing practices was rarely mentioned;
Next steps will be to assess the impact of activities on household incomes and share the results to identify those that contribute more than others to closing the income gap.
